1968 Plymouth Fury - Illinois State Police (tribute) carThis website documents the purchase, restoration and enjoyment of a 1968 Plymouth Fury. Why a ’68 Fury? you ask. After all, it’s not exactly a highly-desired, collectible car. But the reason is simple, and can be summarized in two words: fond memories.

But, of course, you don’t want just a two-word explanation.  So here’s a little more detail…

My first car was a ’68 Plymouth Fury I. It was an ex-police (state trooper) car. Built like a tank, with heavy-duty components that could really “take a licking.” Good thing, too, since I drove it like a tank. Ah, yes, male adolescence… And with a “police pursuit” engine, no less.

Of course, my ’68 Fury is long since gone. Probably used in a demolition derby … where it undoubtedly reigned supreme! So the “next best thing” was finding and restoring a “civilian” version.

After searching for a long time, and finding cars at one extreme or the other — high-priced perfect “collectibles” or rusted-out crap — I came across one that appeared to be in fairly decent shape and at a price more-or-less within my range. So I bought it.

The exterior of the car was in gray primer, but after looking in the trunk I realized that the one I found just happened to be originally the same color as the marked ISP squads, so I just had to turn this into a marked squad (even though that was not my original intent). This is rather serendipitous, however, as it allows me to once again drive a ’68 Fury, while at the same time honoring all those who have served in the Illinois State Police.

And the story begins …
