Went to the Mopar Happening show in Belvidere — as a spectator only, unfortunately, not a participant. (Next year!) Talked to some guys regarding squad car restores/recreations. Took a lot of photos.
Drove car home
Drove it home from Ernie’s. Left it in driveway, but covered, awaiting alignment at Ray’s on Tuesday.
Talked to Don Otto
Talked by phone to Don Otto, a guy from the greater Chicago area who has a restored Fire Department chief’s car as a WTC FDNY 9/11 memorial tribute. Seems like a real nice guy; could be very helpful.
Repairs complete
Paid repair bill at Ernie’s.
Ernie’s calls with repair details
Mike calls from Ernie’s to report their findings:
- Brake lines all look good, so any leak must be from master cylinder.
- Couple of belts are in really bad shape. (One bad, one apparently just real loose.)
- Power steering appears okay, but is wet around it so there might be a leak in the housing itself, but seals appear okay. (Note: Power steering fluid was not low, so it is probably not from that.)
- Tires are real bad. (But I knew that.) I explained that I knew that and was delaying replacing them until other work was finished. He will get a price for me on new tires.
Asked him to look into front-end “float” at speeds above 45 MPH.
Drove car to Ernie’s
Drove car to Ernie’s Auto Service. (After topping off the brake fluid.) Drove pretty good at 40 MPH, but I do detect some front-end “float” above that speed.
Talked to another restorer
Talked to Gene at he Old Car Shop. Sounds like his pricing will be way out of my league…
Dropped off parts
Dropped off parts:
- two Federal Signal Visibars (bar and dual lights)
- extra whip antenna (non-adjustable)
- two spotlights
- spotlight bracket
Discovered oil leak
A lot of oil under the engine compartment. Looks like it’s coming from the oil pan. Aaaarrrggghhh!
Delivered still more parts
Still more parts being added to the trunk for later use:
- hi-band VHF antennas and coax cable
- racing style switches (2) for use with lights/siren overrides
- Motorola speaker for use with VHF radio
- old 23-channel CB radio and microphone (probably too new for the car’s model year)
- “the club” (gotta keep the car from being stolen!)
